This is an interactive exploration of the beautiful healing rhythms, dance and songs from West Africa, including Nigeria, Guinea, Mali and Ghana. Par2cipants are guided through engaging content including traditional music, dance, language and indigenous instruments, such as the djembe drum. The djembe drum was invented in the 12th Century by the Mandinke tribe in what is now Mali, in West Africa.
This community drum, dance and song program invites the community into a rhythmic community experience that fosters a positive environment, elevates mood, enhances self expression, improves social connections and releases stress. No prior experience is necessary to attend. Individual expression, teamwork, performing arts, diversity and wellness are highlighted.
About the Artists:
Vicky Mulligan Life Center Stage, Founder: Vicky has been facilitating drum circles on a regular basis since 2008. She is an artist, social entrepreneur, innovative thinker, visionary, and community leader. She is dedicated to offering programs, workshops and social events through the expressive arts to enrich lives on an individual and community level. Through her work at LIFE Center Stage, Vicky has worked collaboratively with Morris Arts, Morris County Human Services, NewBridge Services, Prevention is Key, Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Morris, C.A.R.E.S, Dover Public Free Library, Morris County Public Library, Butler Public Free Library, Montville Public Library, Roxbury Public Library and many other organizations to find ways to engage the community through the arts. Vicky and her Life Center Stage team have created expressive art prevention programs, host trainings, interactive lectures and performances, public service announcements, concerts, contests, murals, a play, and a documentary to educate, unite, and inspire individuals and communities to come together in fun- filled, uplifting ways, educating through personal experience and creative expression.
Lara Gonzalez, Teaching Artist and Performing Arts Dancer: Lara is a multidisciplinary, humanitarian artist and arts educator whose belief is that creativity is our essence, and art is for everyone. A passionate creator and lifelong dancer, Lara has studied West African music and dance for nearly 30 years including traveling to Guinea 5 times - and counting. Ms. Gonzalez immortalizes her deep love of African culture as Creator, Co- Founder and Artistic Director of her performance and educational group, Marafanyi Drum, Dance & Song - the group has shared the stage with a variety of notable artists including Angélique Kidjo, Habib Koité, Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Ram Dass, Carl Hancock Rux and DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid.
