The North Jersey Civil War Round Table explores antisemitism within the Civil War and with Jefferson Davis' right hand man Judah P. Benjamin. Virtual lecture.
General Grant’s Infamous Order No. 11. 1863.
To enforce President Abraham Lincoln’s administration’s blockade against the Confederacy to cut off the Confederacy from all trade with the North, on December 17, 1862, General Grant issued General Order. 11, which stated: “The Jews, as a class, violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department, and also Department orders, are hereby expelled from the Department.”
Judah P. Benjamin: Brains of the Confederacy … and a Jewish Senator:
As Jefferson Davis’s right hand man, Judah P. Benjamin was the most politically powerful and important Jew of the 19th century – he was also the most widely hated one in the North and portions of the South. Yet, he was a United States Senator; the first Jewish leader nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court; and served in the Confederacy as Attorney General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State.
