An indie singer-songwriter, Jack Malik, loves The Beatles and performs covers of their songs. Yet, Jack is tired of living under their shadow. Jack keeps trying to achieve fame with his own songs and talent, but falls short. He tells his best friend, a school teacher named Ellie, that he fears that he might never succeed. Then, one night, a global blackout occurs while Jack is riding his bike home. He's hit by a bus, but doesn't sustain any serious injuries. Soon after, while singing another Beatles cover song for his friends and family, he discovers that no one remembers the band. Jack has entered an alternate Earth timeline. As Jack tries to share the beauty of The Beatles work with others, even if under his own name, he must decide if the fame he always wanted is what he actually needs to be happy.
