Social activist, feminist, Mexican patriot, fashionista, and world-famous artist, Frida Kahlo was a survivor. Bedridden periodically as a child, adolescent, and adult, she overcame a life-altering disease and a devastating accident. In adulthood she endured psychological suffering. Through it all, she unflinchingly and dramatically portrayed herself on canvas and eventually became a world-famous painter. Her life was as bold, colorful, and unconventional as her art, both of which invited surprise from her admirers and detractors.
